6 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT BUJU BANTON.

1. His real name is ‘Mark Anthony Myrie.’ The name Buju Banton was a combination of Nicknames given to him. Buju was given to him by his mother because he was a chubby kid who looked like a beat fruit which is called ‘buju’ in jamaica language. Banton is a name he adopted from his childhood idol ‘DJ Burro Banton.’
2. He is the youngest of 15 children and he also has 15 children who describe him as a very good father.
3. He is a direct descendant of the Maroons; Africans who escaped from slavery unto the island of Jamaica. They caused the first and second Maroon war against the British colonial rule. The Maroons, who live separate in the island and Jamaican culture are well respected in Jamaica and all over the world for having kept their traditions and culture alive.
4. He obtained a master’s Degree in music business management from the university of New York in 2016 which he attained during his time in prison. Once asked about it before he joined the school he said, “I am already going to classes. I have passed the acceptance test and I will be studying political science and economics. I hope to get a master’s by the time I am released. I can do anything I put my mind to; you know that. I have balls of steel. People who know me know that I am very determined and will achieve my goals despite hardships. I will not allow the system to conquer me.”
5. He has a clothing line called everything BB that he established in 2017 while he was in prison. The merchandise was created in celebration of him and his work whilst he was in prison and has since grown even bigger since his release. He said the aim of the clothing line is to spread a message of love and peace.
