Comedian and TV host of the Daily Show, Trevor Noah made fun of the judiciary system in the country following the ruling by Wilfrida Okwany to temporarily lift the ban on lesbian themed film ‘Rafiki’.
The comedian took jabs at the courts for what seems to be hypocrisy lifting the ban of the controversial Movie so it could be eligible for the Oscars Awards nomination.
“I think it’s amazing how even homophobia bows down to the Academy awards. Homosexuality is an abomination to God’s word. What’s that? the Oscars? Play that film, I want to meet Meryl Streep” Trevor Noah joked.
The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) last month banned the film for depicting homosexuality, a practice considered a taboo in the African Society. The ban in itself attracted a lot of bashing and criticism directed to the KFCB boss, Ezekiel Mutua who said that the body would not sit and watch as the moral fabric of the nation is being destroyed.
“Homosexuality is illegal in Kenya and donors and other development partners are advised to ensure that the content they finance complies with the law,” warned Mutua.
This prompted the film producer Wanuri Kahiu to move to court seeking legal intervention on the matter. The case which was filed under a certificate of urgency saw Justice Wilfrida Okwany temporarily lift the ban for the movie to be screened in cinemas the country o willing adults as one of the requirements for a film to get a nomination in the Oscars.
On receiving the news of the ruling by the High Court to lift the ban, Ms. Kahiu was elated and could not hold back her as she looked forward to the screening of the film in Nairobi a period that ended on September 30.
“I am crying. In a French airport. In SUCH Joy! Our constitution is STRONG! Give thanks to freedom of expression!!!! WE DID IT! We will be posting about Nairobi screening soon” she tweeted.
