BOB MARLEY HAS NEVER WON A GRAMMY.

Written by on July 1, 2021

Reggae music has not always been famous and globally acknowledged as it is right now. Reggae first came into the scene in the 1960’s in Jamaica. The word ‘reggae’ originated from the song ‘Do the reggay’’ by Toots and the Maytals and ended up naming the whole genre of music.

Reggae music and culture has slowly grown to countries such Ethiopia, France, England, USA, Africa and mostly even here in Kenya. The growth has led to reggae being recognized globally to the point of winning the Grammy’s and other international awards.

The first Grammy award for Reggae was presented to Black Uhuru back in 1985 for the ‘Anthem’ album. The Anthem brought reggae music to the limelight and paved the way for other reggae artists to be recognized. This led to other artists such as Ziggy Marley, Shaggy, Sean Paul, Buju Banton and an endless list of Reggae MALE artists. The legendary BOB MARLEY was never recognized or awarded for a Grammy award whilst he was alive. He however, was presented with the ‘Grammy Lifetime achievement award’ in 2001.

With reggae expanding and growing, women also began to sing and perform as reggae artist. It’s only in 2020 that a 19-year-old came to the scene ‘Like a rapture’ and broke that cycle. She is the first woman to win a Grammy Award for reggae music. With the growing industry, I believe this
is the first of many reggae women artist that will win this.

A big congratulation to Koffee for representing all the Reggae women out there
