5 Kenyan Musicians Who Are Really Struggling To Make A Comeback

Written by on August 13, 2018

One of the things that we, as Kenyans, have had to live with is the fact that each of us has a short memory. We’ll talk about something today and by tomorrow a different topic is the subject of our discussion.

Local musicians should always have this in the back of their minds since it calls for consistency on their part or else we’ll forget them as fast as they appeared on the entertainment scene.

If a Kenyan musician takes a break for a few months, they would be lucky if his fans can still remember them. If the musician takes a break for more than a year, then it’s a wrap – unless of course, you are Nyashisnki.

That being said, let’s take a look at 5 musicians who took a break and lived to regret it:

1. Jimw@t – James Wathigo Mburu, alias Jimw@t, achieved so much success at a young age after releasing Under 18 and Kitu Kidogo. Perhaps, the fame and money that came his way were so confusing that he decided to indulge in alcohol and drugs, little did he know that his goose was cooked from that moment.

Jimwat was musically quiet for a few years and when he re-emerged sometime last year a new single titled Blunder no on gave a rat’s arse.

2. Pili Pili – Peter Gatonye, popularly known as Pili Pili, was famed for hits such as Morale, Ukimwona and Kamata Dame in his heyday in the early 2000s. He became a family man shortly after that and this meant that he had to take a hiatus from music.

Pili Pili has been struggling to make a comeback since he re-appeared in the entertainment industry. His latest song, a collabo with little-known singer Kelma, garnered a paltry 3,000 views on YouTube.

3. Flexx – Michael Mwangi, known to his fans as Flexx, topped charts in the early 200os with singles such as Namba Yako, Nyundo and Amejibeba. At the peak of his success, the singer relocated to Sweden to be closer to his fiancee.

Flexx lived in Sweden for about 5 years and when he tried to make a comeback in 2011, his efforts were futile.

4. Kenzo – Kennedy Omondi, alias Kenzo, rose to fame after releasing a single dubbed Mama Milka nine years ago. He later released some songs that did well before taking a break.

When he came back, his fans had moved on and his music has not been doing well. A fortnight ago, Kenzo dropped a new single titled Hoi which has garnered a paltry 458 views on YouTube.

5. Amani – Cecilia Wairimu, known to you and I as Amani, rocked the airwaves in the early 2000s with hits such as Bad Boy, Ninanoki and Tamani. However, Amani was not consistent with her music and before we knew it, her fans had replaced her in their minds.

This might have been one of the reasons why she recently ditched secular music for gospel and released a new song titled Jina Lake Yesu which has performed fairly on the charts. Perhaps the others should borrow a leaf from her.
