Of Havana and Camila Cabello’s Rollercoaster Ride-Post Fifth Harmony!

Written by on March 14, 2019

Leaving the most successful girl group of the decade was the last thing we would have expected of her, much less at the height of their success. Turns out Camila Cabello had other plans,as evidenced by her unceremonious exit from Fifth Harmony, and the grave controversy that ensued. What had been known as a five-member girl group abruptly morphed into a foursome, and what lay ahead was lots of uncertainty as regards which of the two parties would be more successful-utterly reminiscent of the Zayn Malik and One Direction debacle.

Fast forward to months later, and Camila’s chart-topping smash hit Havana debuted to blockbuster global success-the kind that would make her girl group days pale in comparison. This, following a string of preceding lukewarm singles that were not exactly promising of a huge career. Released as one of her debut album’s promotional singles,Havana’s chart success was unprecedented. It went from a little known song by an obscure solo singer,to topping the Hot 100 and becoming the most streamed song by a female singer on Spotify. With such highs, her eponymous solo debut album was bound to be a poster record for a groundbreaking album and boy,so was it! The 10-song album debuted atop the Billboard 200,after the consequent success of the follow-up singles like Never Be the Same.

Havana’s success could in part be attributed to its immense Spanish influence. Camila’s ode to her Cuban roots was a bona fide smart move,at a time when immigration was one of the most talked-about issues in the US. Its undeniable that a huge chunk of her Spanish-speaking audience resonated with the hit. As you’d guess, the accolades would come calling, and in droves! At the 2018 VMAs,Camila Cabello snagged the biggest awards of the night for Video of The Year and Artist of The Year. Havana also beat out Drake‘s ‘God’s Plan’ and Ed Sheeran‘s ‘Shape of You’ to become 2018’s best-selling song. A Grammy nod wouldn’t hurt either, and Camila snagged two-Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Solo Performance!

Hers has been an absolute rollercoaster ride. Will her sophomore album come with as much success?
