I read at least a book a month and a few online articles a day. I try to have a consistent routine of reading to wind down before bed but often I read in spurts, feast or famine style.
Some people take reading as a sport, indeed it is a sport to be enjoyed and learned from. Below are some reasons why you should read;
Gain valuable knowledge.
For some good reason, reading will help you learn vocabularies which also help you in terms of your speech. One of the benefits of reading is learning. If you’re reading a book which has been researched for over 20 years, you will most likely gain knowledge from that book.
Exercise your brain.
What do they say about a dormant brain? It will shrink due to no exercise. Research has confirmed that reading stimulates a complex network of circuits and signals in the brain. Plus, as you improve your reading ability, these networks become stronger and more sophisticated.
Improve your focus.
The brain-stimulating activities from reading have shown to slow down cognitive decline in old age with people who participated in more mentally stimulating activities over their lifetimes. It also has shown a slower rate of decline in memory and other mental capacities.
Enjoy entertainment.
Don’t you just love reading an exciting piece of article or a book? How does a story generate something you relate to and enjoy over time?
If you struggle reading, try to start with articles, then gradually move on to novels. Also focus on things you enjoy, if it’s sports, read more on sports. Have fun discovering new books.
