What is Life After Campus?

When you picked your course after KCSE, what made you choose your current course? Most of the time, parents pay for what they believe will help secure their children a better future. If not their career paths, your parents might end up directing you where your “rich” auntie or uncle is doing. Your parents will even go an extra mile to invite your relatives or family friends for advice.

When you set foot on campus, you are an adult. You are now free to decide whether you will attend the classes, join in on the group discussions, go to the library etc. Eventually, the exam results are what set you apart, right? You are now able to use your freedom to not only attend school but to also join the boring debate club or dance club.. Whichever you prefer.

After several years, you are now equipped to face the world. You have probably graduated. Your next step is very vital. I remember when I finished school, I could not wait to get a job. Like many graduates, the next step is to reach out to that “uncle/aunt” who promised to give them a chance in their company. If you are lucky enough the promise is fulfilled and you become the 1% success story in your family.

Many of you who are reading this are hoping that the grass is greener after campus, you are wrong. The grass is greener, where you water it. I remember having  part-time jobs when I was on campus, not many of my peers were open to this idea. This simple act opened doors. My life changed to having many opportunities.

Here is the sad truth, life is what you make it. You could be successful even before you finish your final. It all depends on your efforts. I know of a former classmate who started a company even before he finished campus. I know of someone who dropped off and became a famous musician. Whether your gifts are natural or acquired you will achieve anything you set your mind to.

Life after campus is what you make it! Start working on it now!
