Did you know that the Buganda Kingdom has a radio station? This must have been a perfect way to teach the people about the kingdom right? Take a moment to map out how impactful this is the Uganda nation. The young people can finally get back to their roots.
This Monday, 31st July 2023, Ugandans showed up at the palace grounds of the country’s largest kingdom Buganda. The rainy day did not stop them from the 30 years celebration since the crowning of King Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.
In the pre-colonial error, in the 1900s Buganda Kingdom was considered one of the medieval kingdoms and is still considered that upto today. The Kingdom was founded in the 14th century along the shore of Lake Victoria with kabaka (king) Kintu, who came to the region from northeast Africa. Kintu, through his explorations emerged as a leader of multiple clans, conquered the area, defeating the last indigenous ruler, Bemba Musota, to establish the current kingdom. Kintu, however, encouraged the clans to intermarry with the indigenous people creating the now known Buganda Kingdom people.
When was the last time you saw people wearing Kitenge or Kanzu? Let me simplify this, when was the last time you wore an African outfit? The Buganda Kingdom prayed for the 68-year-old monarch, whose ancestors ruled the region that includes Kampala.
Supporters showed the King honor by hoisting him on his shoulders. They were all wearing leopard skin and clothes made from the bark of trees. King Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, in turn waved at the crowd.
The people given a chance to speak were, Charles Peter Mayiga, prime minister of Buganda and shop attendant Annet Nakafeero, officials from the kingdom and the central government. To entertain everyone there were school children who performed songs.
Just like the United Kingdom, the Buganda Kingdom has collaborate with the current governments and with the Presidents that have ruled the nation over the decades
Let’s take this back to Kenya, which kingdom still exists? Do you think we’ll ever have a chance to revive our traditions with modern age technology? Perhaps we should hold a conference to remind ourselves of our traditions. Maybe we should hold a conference with our grandparents, right?
