Facts about the viral red-eye disease.

Over the past few weeks, there has been an increase in cases of red eye disease.

In a statement released on Thursday, a health alert on conjunctivitis was been issued by the Ministry of Health. The ministry stated its concern over the possible increase in viral red eye cases.

This alert follows the massive cases of red eye as it is majorly known, being reported all over Mombasa after the disease had hit Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. 

“The cases are very contagious and are presenting with red eyes, eye swelling eye discharge, and itchiness.” warned the ministry.

“Take preventative measures such as washing hands, using sanitisers, maintaining hygiene, seeking prompt treatment, and self isolate if symptomatic,” the Ministry advised.

What is conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis majorly known as red eye is an irritation or inflammation of the conjunctiva which covers the white part of the eyeball.

What are the causes?

Redeye or conjunctivitis can be caused by:

  • allergies
  • viruses
  • bacteria
  • chemical splash
  • In newborns, it can be caused by blocked tear dust.

Ways in which it can spread. 

  • Touching contaminated places
  • Skin-to-skin contact.

What are its symptoms?

  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Swollen lining of the eye
  • Puffy eyes
  • Tearing of the eyes.
  • Discharge crusting in the eyes.
  • Sometimes it can manifest nasal congestion,
  • Runny nose, or sneezing.

Measures to prevent the red-eye disease:

  • Wash hands regularly with soap and water
  • Use sanitizers
  • Maintain hygiene,
  • Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes.
  • Avoid touching the face.
  • Avoid touching personal items such as towels and make-up kits.
  • Seeking prompt treatment in case of the symptoms
  • Self-isolate if symptomatic.
