Nakumicha declares SHIF contributions mandatory for unemployed youth.

Every Kenyan, including unemployed youth aged over 25, will be required to pay for the new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

According to the announcement from the Ministry of Health, unemployed Kenyan youth will not be exempted from the new monthly contribution to the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) starting from July 1, 2024.

The government stated that this new initiative will provide all Kenyans with the opportunity to access affordable healthcare, regardless of their employment status.

Health Minister Susan Nakhumicha stated that the monthly contribution to the program will be mandatory for all Kenyans aged over 25.

Employees in the formal, public, and private sectors will be required to contribute 2.75% of their total salary each month.

Formal sector employees will share KSh 300 per month towards the program. However, CS Nakhumicha emphasized that those who are unemployed and aged over 25 will be required to pay a contribution of KSh 300.

“Based on the records we have from the previous NHIF, the employed are approximately 3 million families out of a total of 5.5 million households.”

According to Minister Nahumicha, only youth under the age of 25 will enjoy the benefits through their parents.
