President William Ruto directed the Ministry of Education to postpone the reopening of all schools until further notice.
The president said this during his national address on Friday.
“The Ministry of Education is directed to postpone the dates of reopening of all schools in the country for the second term until further notice,” the President said.
The new directive comes barely three days to when schools were scheduled to reopen on May 6.
The schools were initially set for reopening on April 29 but were postponed by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu due to heavy rains.
Machogu said they have received data that some schools have been adversely affected by the ongoing floods.
He said sending students and staff to the affected schools would be putting their lives at risk.
“The devastating effects of the rains in some of the schools are so severe that it will be imprudent to risk the lives of learners and staff before water-tight measures are put in place to ensure adequate safety of all affected school communities.
“Based on this assessment, the Ministry of Education has resolved to postpone the reopening of all primary and secondary schools by one week, to Monday, May 6, 2024,” Machogu said.
