DJ Joe Mfalme: “Nililipwa na chipo za Sanford…”

DJ Joe Mfalme, a celebrated Kenyan DJ, shared his journey from humble beginnings to achieving significant success in the entertainment industry. 

He recounted how, early in his career, he often wasn’t paid in cash but instead received what the promoters could offer. 

His first paid gig, for instance, was compensated with food—specifically, chips from Sanford. 

Reflecting on this, he noted, “Eh nililipwa na chipo. Chipo za Sanford. Boss it’s crazy, ata afadhali chipo. 

Kuna watu wanapigiwa tu makofi, that’s why these days I have the mindset that hakuna pesa ndogo, me huwork na budget ya client, But I have my limits as well, air but bro, nimepigiwa makofi hii Nairobi (clap for deejaying only).”

Despite these early challenges, DJ Joe Mfalme had a clear vision: to make DJing a respectable and well-paid profession. 

To achieve this, he focused on branding himself in a way that highlighted his worth and value to potential clients.

He emphasized the need for DJs to offer more than just playing music, asking, “Anyone can play music, so what other extra thing can you do?”

Gradually, he started securing small paid events, earning between Sh500 and Sh2,000.

His big break came when he landed a gig with Big Brother, which he described as his most memorable.

 “Upto today it was the biggest in SA. I did 3 years consecutively. It opened international doors.”

Throughout his career, DJ Joe Mfalme has maintained a Godly foundation, attributing his success to his Christian upbringing.

He emphasized the importance of staying sober on the job, sharing, “Lazima ukuwe sober kwa job. 

I used to play drums in Church, and being in Sunday school, Up to today I believe when you build your career on a Godly foundation, you will succeed, whatever people believe online, I don’t care.”
