Socialite Huddah Monroe has voiced her astonishment and disappointment at the apparent shift in focus among Kenyan celebrities, who she claims have stopped addressing social injustices and are now more concerned with showcasing their lifestyles.
In a recent Instagram post, Monroe shared her reaction to a post by Instagram user Bravin Yuri, who criticized Kenyan celebrities for their lack of empathy and activism.
Yuri highlighted the incongruity of celebrities flaunting their wealth while their fans suffer from social injustices and the disappearance of loved ones.
“Myself I was shocked. No one was posting anymore,” Monroe wrote, expressing her disbelief at the silence from public figures.
Yuri’s original post was a call to action, urging celebrities to use their platforms for more than just personal gain.
“It cannot be that people are being found murdered, some missing, and you people are on social media instead of calling out the government. You are posting for us the mansions you are building and cars you are buying. Are you people even empathetic? Your fans have lost friends, loved ones, etc., and instead of pushing more for justice, it’s like you moved on,” he wrote.
He further criticized celebrities for what he perceived as performative activism, stating that many had only participated in protests to avoid backlash and for photo opportunities.
“It’s even sad that they are not posting photos of the missing Kenyans. It can’t be business as usual when this country has not been liberated from people who are hellbent on impoverishing Kenyans and auctioning the country to foreign powers. When the country is on its knees because of corruption etc., you will not even fuel that car you bought,” he added.
In response, Monroe reflected on her own sense of patriotism and expressed regret over the current state of affairs. “As a patriotic Kenyan, I had tattooed a Kenyan flag. I’m embarrassed, to say the least,” she admitted.
Monroe’s comments have sparked discussions among her followers, with many echoing her sentiments and calling for celebrities to take a more active role in advocating for social justice and holding the government accountable.
