Doctors at Nairobi Hospital are planning to go on strike starting Monday, September 16, 2024, due to issues with the hospital’s governance.
The Kenya Hospital Association and the Admitting Staff Association (Doctors) have demanded the resignation of the entire board of management.
In a press statement released today, the associations announced that they have formally requisitioned an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM), which is set to take place on September 18, 2024 at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Upper Hill.
The meeting will begin at 2:30 p.m. and aims to gather members of the association to address the crisis and take decisive action against the current administration.
The doctors plan to stop all hospital admissions, including private, critical, and emergency cases, until their demands are met.
They are calling for the board’s resignation by midnight on September 16, 2024, and have warned that the strike will continue until changes are made at the hospital’s management level.
The association emphasized that the strike is a protest against what they described as “governance failures” by the current board of directors, which have worsened patient care and created an unsustainable situation for staff and patients.
The planned strike is expected to have a significant impact on healthcare services at the hospital, with no new admissions being accepted except for in-patients who are already receiving treatment.
This measure is expected to affect scheduled surgeries and critical care patients.
In addition to halting medical services, the Kenya Hospital Association has urged its members to attend the Extraordinary General Meeting, which is seen as a critical turning point for the hospital.
The statement also appealed to the general public and healthcare professionals, urging them to support the doctors’ movement in pushing for a resolution to the crisis and restoring the hospital’s reputation as a top-tier healthcare provider.
“We ask the general public, particularly members of the public of goodwill, to stand with us in this critical moment,” the statement reads.
The hospital’s board of management has yet to issue an official response to the doctors’ demands, and it remains unclear what steps will be taken to address the situation before the impending strike date.
