Manchester City is facing a significant concern over Rodri’s fitness after the midfielder suffered a knee injury during their intense 2-2 draw against Arsenal on Sunday.
The 28-year-old Spanish star was forced off the pitch in the 20th minute after an awkward incident during a corner, where he appeared to twist his right knee.
Rodri, a key figure for both City and Spain, now awaits a crucial scan to determine the severity of the injury.
The injury occurred as Rodri battled Arsenal’s Thomas Partey for positioning in the box.
As they jostled for space, Rodri’s leg jarred awkwardly on the turf, causing him to fall and clutch his knee in clear discomfort.
This wasn’t his only clash during the game, as moments earlier, Rodri collided with Kai Havertz and was left momentarily floored after attempting to block the German’s run.
Pep Guardiola’s concern was palpable after the match. “Rodri is strong, but for him to leave the pitch, he must have felt something,” the City manager explained. “I haven’t spoken to the doctor yet, but it’s worrying.”
Rodri’s team-mate, Bernardo Silva, also shared his uncertainty regarding the extent of the injury, saying, “He’s walking, but he wasn’t in a good way. We’ll know more tomorrow.”
Silva’s comments added to the anxiety surrounding Rodri’s situation.
There is growing fear that Rodri could face a long spell on the sidelines. Reports from Spain, including those by Marca and ESPN, have hinted at a possible ACL injury, which could potentially rule him out for the remainder of the season.
If confirmed, this would be a major blow to City’s ambitions.
Rodri’s absence could impact City’s upcoming fixtures, including crucial Premier League games against Newcastle and Brighton, as well as a daunting trip to Anfield to face Liverpool on December 1.
Given his remarkable influence, Guardiola will hope for a swift recovery, as Rodri’s presence has been pivotal in both City’s and Spain’s recent successes.
“He’s the best holding midfielder in the world,” Guardiola praised, adding, “He’s a potential Ballon d’Or winner.”
