“Gor Mahia legend Austin Oduor ‘Makamu’ Origi has sadly passed away. He was a former captain of both Harambee Stars and Gor Mahia. Oduor famously led Gor Mahia to victory in the 1987 African Cup Winners’ Cup (Mandela Cup). He was the father of Arnold Origi, Kenya’s No. 1 goalkeeper for many years. He was also the brother to Legend Mike Okoth, the father of ex-Liverpool striker Divock Origi. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time. 🙏🏽 Rest in peace. 🙏🏼”
The late Oduor’s legacy is deeply rooted in Kenyan football.
He was not only an outstanding player and captain, but also the patriarch of a football dynasty.
His son, Arnold Origi, is a professional goalkeeper currently playing for Östersund and was Kenya’s number-one goalkeeper for many years.
Oduor was also the brother of Mike Okoth, another Kenyan football legend, and uncle to Divock Origi, who made his name playing for Liverpool FC and the Belgian national team.
Football fans and sports personalities have been pouring in their tributes to celebrate Oduor’s immense contributions to Kenyan football.
One commenter wrote, “RIP Captain… a true Kenyan Hero.”
