President William Ruto has nominated Kithure Kindiki, the Cabinet Secretary for the Interior and National Administration, as his Deputy presidential nominee.

This nomination follows the impeachment of the former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, at the Senate Assembly.

Who exactly is Kithure Kindiki?

Kithure Kindiki was born in 1972.

He is a father of three and is known for his extensive experience in public administration, governance, public policy, lawmaking, legal advisory, and constitutional affairs at both municipal and international levels.

He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from Moi University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law, a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree, and a Doctorate (PhD) in International Law from the University of Pretoria in South Africa.

Before entering politics, Kindiki taught law and held administrative positions at Moi University School of Law and the University of Nairobi School of Law.

He began his career as an Assistant Lecturer in Law at Moi University and later became a Lecturer at the University of Nairobi.

At the young age of 33, he rose to the position of Head of Department of Public Law and was later named Associate Dean at 35.

He was then promoted to the position of Associate Professor of Law at Kenyatta University.

Kindiki has authored 35 publications including books, book chapters, and articles in local and international peer-reviewed journals.

He is also an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a member of several professional organisations including the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS), the International Association for the Study of Forced Migration (IASFM), the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), the East African Law Society (EALS), and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).

Kindiki has enjoyed President Ruto’s support, having been part of the president’s legal team during his defence at the International Criminal Court (ICC) over crimes against humanity charges.

Before his appointment to the Cabinet, Kindiki served as the Senator for Tharaka Nithi County from 2013 to 2022.

During his tenure, he served as the Senate Majority Leader from 2013 to 2017 and as the Senate Deputy Speaker from 2017 onwards.

As the Interior and National Administration CS, Kindiki has overseen various milestones and reforms in the ministry, including the Police Equipment Modernization, implementation of Police Reforms, and simplification of the vetting processes for the issuance of National Identity cards.

He has also focused on recognising minority groups and stateless communities to ensure they receive Kenyan citizenship and has played a key role in enhancing the fight against banditry and general insecurity across the country.

Additionally, he has spearheaded the enrollment of 13,120 inmates into formal education programs, among other initiatives.
