In recent weeks, flamboyant car dealer Khalif Kairo, also known as Joseph Kairo Wambui, has experienced a tumultuous time.
His car dealership, Kai and Karo Limited, has been embroiled in financial controversy, client complaints, and legal issues, prompting widespread discussions about his business practices and rumours regarding his arrest.
Justus Ombati, the Kasarani Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer, confirmed the rumours about his arrest.
Ombati disclosed that more complainants had come forward with similar accusations, complicating the ongoing investigation.
Additionally, three employees of Kai and Karo Limited were detained.
Kairo has decided to address these issues publicly through a tell-all video he released on social media.
Financial Challenges
In a candid video posted on X (formerly Twitter), Kairo acknowledged the significant financial difficulties faced by his dealership.
He attributed these challenges to client defaults, which have created a liquidity crisis within the company.
“We’ve dealt with situations where clients have defaulted on numerous car payments. This has put immense pressure on our cash flow, as we still need to fulfil our commitments to suppliers and pay taxes, even when clients fail to meet their obligations,” Kairo explained.
He admitted that the firm had not responded adequately to client concerns, particularly in terms of communication during the crisis.
Nonetheless, he reassured customers that his team is actively seeking solutions, including working with external stakeholders like banks and investment firms.
“This is the first time in my ten years in the car industry that I’m facing such a crisis. However, we are implementing measures to resolve it,” he stated.
Claims of Online Sabotage
Apart from financial difficulties, Kairo accused his competitors of orchestrating online attacks against his business.
He alleged that they had hired celebrities and bloggers to damage his company’s reputation.
“These attacks are designed to instil fear and spread rumours about our stability and my safety.
However, despite these efforts to destabilise us, we remain resolute. We’ve been a disruptive force in the automotive industry in Kenya,” Kairo said.
Despite these challenges, Kairo proudly highlighted the achievements of Kai and Karo Limited, including over Sh1 billion in car sales within two years, being named Kenya’s Best Car Dealer of the Year, and providing employment to over 50 young people
An Appeal to Kenyans
Kairo appealed to his clients for patience as the company navigated these difficulties.
“I ask our clients to bear with us. We are reaching out to provide updated timelines for delayed vehicles. This is part of our company’s growth stage, and we will emerge stronger,” he stated.
He expressed gratitude to his family, friends, and wife, Wavinya Maria, for their unwavering support during these challenging times.
“I am fully resuming my duties. Our showrooms remain open, and business continues. Let’s keep the trust alive as we work to regain stability,” he assured his customers.
