Media personality and comedian Captain Otoyo, whose real name is Kazungu Matano, is mourning the loss of his elder sister, Amina Kadzo Matano.
Amina passed away earlier today at Nakuru Referral Hospital, also known as Nakuru Provincial General Hospital.
In accordance with Islamic traditions, her remains are being transported to Matuga in Kwale County, where she will be laid to rest later today.
Otoyo shared the heartbreaking news on his social media platforms, asking for prayers and support during this difficult time.
This tragedy follows another significant loss that Otoyo experienced two years ago.
On March 2, 2021, he announced the passing of his brother, Bashir Matano, who was buried the next day at Mogotio Muslim Cemetery in accordance with Islamic rites after prayers were held at Salatul Dhuhr.
Kazungu Matano is one of seven siblings from the Digo tribe, originally from Mombasa before relocating to Nakuru.
In a past interview, Otoyo revealed that their mother worked tirelessly, selling illicit brew to provide for the family.
Despite their struggles, the family remained close-knit, although Otoyo’s siblings have largely stayed out of the public eye.
Otoyo began his career in the arts at the Kenya National Theatre, performing in set book plays.
His comedic talent quickly gained recognition, and he became a household name through his role in “Papa Shirandula,” a popular Kenyan TV show on Citizen TV.
His comedic persona, often delivered in a distinctive Luo accent, earned him a spot on the Churchill Show, further establishing his status as one of Kenya’s leading entertainers.
Transitioning into radio, Otoyo joined Radio Maisha before moving to Milele FM, where he continues to entertain audiences.
His ability to balance humour with authenticity has made him a beloved figure in the Kenyan entertainment industry.
