The Kenya Creates Film Premiere event went down on the 21st of February at Sholom House Gardens and it was nothing but a magical experience for all those who attended the film event.
The premiere featured four daring and inspiring short films from the Kenya Creates Project and they were nothing short of perfection.
Each film in its own style addressed pressing discussions about youth, their bodies and their choices.
The films were created by a diverse group of storytellers exploring new creative avenues.
Anthony “Ty” Ngachira, a comedian, was making his film debut; while Adelle Onyango, a podcaster and poet, was transitioning into filmmaking.
Abigail Arunga, a writer and scriptwriter, was marking her directorial debut and Lydia Matata, a seasoned filmmaker, brought her expertise back to the screen.
The event was hosted by none other than Mugambi Nthiga.
As we all know in Kenya an event can’t be successful if the fans don’t get bitings and some some music to dance their nights away.
Docubox did not come to play, they ensured that they catered to everyone’s needs by providing good food, drinks and classic poets by Mufasa, a live musical set by Amara Tari and a DJ mix by the famous Sir M.
It being a film event, they had to showcase their latest short films starting with FLOAT by Lydia Matata.
The film featured a teenage girl swimmer who battles self-doubt and body image struggles dreading the pool.
The second film was HOME by poet Adelle Onyango.
The film showcased some of the struggles girls undergo when growing up and the constant pressure of trying to fit in with their peers.
The main actress Vanessa Aika went to great lengths to show the emotions that she went through and the experience she had with bodyshamming.
By the end of the film half of the attendees were left in tears cause of Adele’s masterpiece
The third film was Bella is Dying, Maybe Next Week by Abigal Arunga . It showcased a 12-year-old girl spiralling into a panic after an online self-diagnosis rabbit hole.
The last film of the day was Know Thy Body, Know ThySelf by Anthony Ngachira showcased an honest, humorous take on male sexuality and taboos.
