The son of Nominated Member of Parliament (MP) David Sankok died on Monday afternoon, May 2 after allegedly shooting himself in the head. The incident happened at Sankok’s Ewaso Nyiro home in Narok at 3pm Monday.

Recently, MP-Elect David Sankok faces charges of improper storage of firearms following the death of his 15-year-old son. Investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department are planning to prosecute Sankok for violating the gun control law as a license holder.

This comes after government pathologist Johansen Oduor on Friday conducted a second autopsy on the deceased which revealed that the minor died from a single gunshot to the head.

“The boy, who is the firstborn child in their family, reportedly accessed the firearm from his dad’s bedroom,” said Ethaiba, Narok County Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO)

As per the Firearms Act, all licensed gun holders are expected to store their firearms and ammunition in a secure location, preferably a safe which is difficult to access for anyone without the required combination lock.

“Each store shall be, and be maintained constantly, secure to the satisfaction of the licensing officer, and shall have only one means of entry thereto, which shall be provided with two locks, of which master-keys shall be delivered to, and retained by, the licensing officer,” says the Firearms Act.

Gun holders who fail to comply with the law risk a one year prison sentence, a Ksh. 10,000 fine or both.

Interestingly, his father also attended the same school, Kericho High School, Students and Teachers profiled Memusi as a disciplined, open-minded boy, sociable learner who was good with others.

Dr. Daniel Chelule, the principal of Kericho High School, told Nation.Africa that the deceased had a very gracious personality and that the institution was shocked by the sudden turn of events that led to his death.

“He has generally performed well and achieved a C-plus average grade at the end of the 3rd semester 2021,” said Dr. Chelule.

“He was outgoing and always wanted the best for all. He was someone to share your challenges with. The news of his death shocked us,” said a classmate.

It is still not clear how the young boy got access to the keys of the Safe?!
