BREAKING BIAS – ITS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY!
Written by Ann Munyasya on March 8, 2022
In 2022, bringing focus to International Women’s Day, is the call to imagine a world that is free of stereotypes and discrimination: an environment where bias of any sort is unacceptable.
This year we are focusing on the younger women who are killing it in their profession. Don’t get me wrong, we appreciate our elders who paved way for us to prosper in all corners.
Sylvia Gathoni aka QueenArrow.
At only 22years, she is a professional gamer and content creator for UYU and a Global e-sports Federation Member who was also set to graduate from law school. Sylvia plays Tekken professionally in tournaments, and she was the first African to be signed to a major e-sports team.
Sylvia has used her platform as a leading gamer to advocate for advancing and improving the industry. Sylvia called out the lack of diversity in esports. “Video games, and by extension esports, was not meant for women, more so, Black women,” she shared. “The industry was created with straight White men from ages 16-40. We women have had to fight (and continue to fight) for a seat at the table.”
Mary Njoroge.
World soccer governing body Fifa has appointed Kenyan assistant referee Mary Njoroge as one of four African referees who will officiate in the forthcoming FIFA Women World Cup slated for France from 7th of next month to 7th July this year.
When we talk soccer the first that comes to mind is men. Why? Because we consider this a men’s sport. Congratulations Mary we celebrate your hard work!
Liz Mills.
She is an Australian basketball coach who is currently the head coach of Moroccan men’s basketball team AS Sale’. Since 2011 Mills has been the head coach and assistant coach in Africa of top league men’s club teams, national men’s university teams and national men’s teams.
Now would you look at that a woman leading men!
Dj Ivy Awino.
Performing as DJ Poizon Ivy, Awino is the second-ever female NBA team DJ, in 2018, she became the first woman to DJ the NBA All-Star Game. Wow honestly how motivating is this? Can we just acknowledge the hard work women are putting out there and paving way for everyone in the society?
Who are you celebrating this women’s day?
Happy international women’s day fellow queens you deserve that throne!
