On my first day of school preps were always at dawn; that is wee hours of the morning between 5am to 6am! Before normal classes kick off. This would give us some time to plan ahead and revise, to complete pending assignments for exams or courses. This meant going to bed at a reasonable time and some even preferred to shower and wear their uniforms the night before to avoid running late.

How fruitful were the morning preps though?! Having preps in the morning and after classes was a daily routine back in the days. A similar arrangement follows after classes in the evening, especially in boarding schools, where students are only given time to take supper before returning to their reading tables.

Facts ;

  • Several studies suggest that preps encroach on normal sleep time and there are chances that they could negatively impact academic performance.
  • A study on sleep impact versus academic performance by lead researcher and psychologist at University of California Berkeley, Bryce Mander, shows that if one sleeps for less than six hours, they are cheating themselves and most likely won’t be able to learn much.
  • From the same study, the latter part of sleep, which ensures that brain waves promote our capacity to store fact-based memories is affected, a finding that raises concern whether early morning classes are really necessary.

Do you think that the morning and night preps are really fruitful?!
