Netflix has something major up its sleeves. In a bid to expand its international reach, the streaming platform is eyeing African native content. To this end,the powers that be at Netflix have traveled to Africa to recruit local creators. According to Dorothy Ghettuba,Head of African Originals at Netflix, the site has particular focus in Kenya,South Africa and Nigeria.
Just last week, the first ever African Original Series,Queen Sono, debuted on Netflix. The series is based on a South African spy by the same name,hell-bent in solving the mystery of her mother’s death.
‘‘It’s been an exciting week to crisscross the continent and be reaffirmed that we really have stories to tell. Nigeria, South Africa, and also Kenya are all countries that the online streaming company is interested in.We know that Africa is a wide region…but we really have to be very deliberate in our approach.”
