SARIT, CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY AS EAST AFRICA’S PREMIER SHOPPING DESTINATION

Nairobi, Kenya, May 13, 2023:

Sarit, East and Central Africa’s first enclosed shopping mall, proudly marked its 40th anniversary, a journey that started with two gentlemen – the late Bachubhai Shah and the late Manekbhai Rughani, – with a spectacular Gala Dinner held at the Sarit Expo Centre. 

The momentous occasion celebrated four decades of success, growth, and the unwavering support of Tenants, Business Partners and Shoppers who have made Sarit their mall of choice and destination mall. 

Since its inception in 1983, Sarit, has been at the forefront of transforming the shopping experience in the region. Recognizing the increasing demand for a modern shopping complex. The visionary board of Sarit, embarked on a journey to create a space that would offer unparalleled convenience and an extensive range of products and services to Local and International Shoppers.

“Phases 1 and 2 combined brought the development to a total built-up space of approximately 360,000 sq. ft. Phase 3 introduced an additional 600,000 sq. ft of total built-up space, expanding the total built-up area to over 1.1 million sq. ft. which included the Sarit Expo Centre – the largest of its kind, in a mall and in the region. We also included a roof-top garden of approx. 30,000 sq. ft for F&B outlets with, a water feature and 110 indigenous trees.  Parking is a key success factor for malls and the plan included a ten-story parking lot with 950 parking spaces; whose green wall is a unique feature, designed by a Kenyan landscape architect, using entirely indigenous species. We want to continue to promote sustainability and biodiversity in the area. The Centre is now a City, Your City where you can find everything you need from banking, fashion, electronics, entertainment, groceries to health services. 

We embrace technology and are set to launch the Digital Loyalty app and Parking Aps in June that will continue to position us as the mall of innovation and service to our Shoppers.” said Sarit Shah, CEO of Sarit, during his speech at the Gala Dinner. 

Sarit’s journey has not been easy, from the attempted coup in 1983, interest rate hikes in 1997, post-election violence in 2007, the fire in 2018, and most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic.  However, Sarit, has also experienced the good times, having been the first mall to launch the first Enclosed Shopping Mall in East and Central Africa, a Hyper Market, Christmas Decorations with a campaign that included Prizes for shoppers, Customer Loyalty Program, Gift Vouchers, Paid Parking, Exhibition Hall, and this year the first mall to run a mid-year Shop and Win Campaign.

I acknowledge and thank the entire Sarit Management and Sarit Expo Team, our suppliers, past and present, who provide security, cleaning, equipment maintenance, parking management and many others who have been a vital part of this journey. I also express my gratitude to our contractors, consultants, law firms and auditors. Finally, I would like to appreciate, the directors who have continued to carry forward the Founders’ vision. Their unwavering commitment, leadership, guidance, and foresight have been instrumental in steering the Centre to where it is today, Your City.” said Sarit Shah, CEO 

As Sarit celebrates its 40th anniversary, it remains dedicated to upholding its unique character and charm. The management team looks forward to the future, with plans for additional three phases that will include commercial spaces, residences, and a hotel, ensuring the center’s continuous growth and relevance in the retail landscape.
