Ababu Namwambu admits he was unsuited for sports CS.

Former Sports CS Ababu Namwamba has explained why newly-appointed Sports CS Kipchumba Murkomen is the right fit for the sports ministry in Kenya.

Namwamba, in an interview on the Safari za Mabingwa show with Oga Obinna, stated that he has known Murkomen for a long time and commended him for his passion for sports.

He further revealed that if he were the one selecting the new cabinet secretaries, he would still choose Murkomen to lead the sports ministry, emphasizing their long-standing relationship.

Namwamba also mentioned that they attended the same university for their law post-graduate studies, which has contributed to their familiarity and shared experiences.

‘I hand over a ministry reborn’ – Namwamba proud of his tenure as Murkomen takes over

“First of all, Murkomen is such a fantastic friend…we even went to the same college for our postgraduate studies. We have a long history together and if you had asked me to choose a successor, among my colleagues in Cabinet, I wouldn’t have gone beyond Murkomen,” Namwamba said.

“I would have picked Murkomen because I know his passion for sports and he is a sports person himself. He has tried to break my record at Bunge FC…I still hold the record for the highest number of goals scored and Murkomen came close but not quite. I do not doubt that Murkomen is a good fit for sports and I have no doubt that he is going to be a big success,” he added.

Following a cabinet reshuffle that occurred due to anti-Finance Bill protests and allegations of widespread corruption, Murkomen was nominated by President William Ruto as the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports.

He succeeded Namwamba, who had held the position for the past two years.

Murkomen holds a PhD in Law from the American University, Washington College of Law, and has also earned degrees from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and the University of Nairobi, where he completed his Masters and Bachelor’s degrees, respectively.
