Dancehall artist Vybz Kartel has been released from prison after serving 13 years for a murder conviction.
The Jamaica Court of Appeal decided not to pursue a retrial for his murder case, considering his declining health and the psychological and financial toll it has taken on him.
His defense highlighted his serious health issues, such as a swollen neck and face, which have worsened over time.
Kartel’s release has led to celebrations among his fans and supporters worldwide.
The court of appeal unanimously ruled to free Kartel as well as his co-accused, Shawn ‘Storm’ Campbell and Andre St John, and Kahira Jones.
The decision was influenced by various factors, including the unavailability of witnesses and trial exhibits, in addition to Kartel’s deteriorating health.
The court found that the prosecution did not adequately address the availability of its witnesses and that several trial exhibits were either missing or unaccounted for.
Moreover, the significant resources used during the original trial were considered a substantial burden on the court system.
Vybz Kartel’s release has been met with widespread jubilation.
Fans gathered outside the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre in downtown Kingston, chanting “Free World Boss” as they awaited his release.
The area was cordoned off by the police and military to manage the large crowd and ensure security.
