Gor Mahia has announced that Brazilian head coach Leo Neiva has left his position after terminating his contract with the 21-time FKF Premier League champions.
His departure follows a challenging four months in charge of the team.
Neiva faced increasing pressure from the passionate Gor Mahia supporters, and unfortunately, he was even assaulted by some fans after a recent draw.
This came after watching his team drop 10 points in their last four matches.
Since their victory against Poster Rangers on October 19, Gor Mahia has struggled, managing only a goalless draw against KCB and suffering a 2-1 loss to Nairobi City Stars.
They then played to a 2-2 draw with Murang’a Seal, despite having a 2-0 lead at one point, and most recently endured an away loss to Bandari.
As a result, Gor Mahia now finds itself in an unfamiliar 12th position in the league table, with only eight points—nine points behind league leaders KCB.
However, they do have two matches in hand. Neiva has explained some of the reasons for the team’s underperformance but remains confident in their potential for a turnaround.
In a statement released on the club’s official social media channels, the organization expressed gratitude to the Brazilian coach for his “commitment, hard work, and contributions” during his brief tenure.
“The decision was made after the club management invoked a contractual clause that led to the immediate end of the coach’s tenure,” the statement read in part.
The club will now begin the search for a new manager who “embodies the values and aspirations” of the team and who “will bring renewed energy” and “strategic insight” to the squad.
Neiva was appointed as K’Ogalo’s head coach at the end of last season following the departure of Northern Irishman Jonathan McKinstry, who took over the vacant position with the Gambia national team.
The 46-year-old coach has previously managed Uganda’s Vipers FC, Sudan’s Al Merreikh, and St. Kitts, among other teams.
His last stint at Vipers lasted only 156 days, during which he achieved three wins, one draw, and one loss in five matches before being dismissed.
