Comedian Eric Omondi is leading a fundraiser for singer and songwriter Mary Maina, also known as Marya, who recently suffered a stroke that paralysed one side of her body.
On Monday, Omondi visited Marya at her home and made a public appeal to well-wishers for financial assistance.
He explained that Marya is currently unable to walk or perform physical duties, making it difficult for her to cover her living expenses and medical bills.
“Hey everyone, this is Marya, our beautiful sister who has entertained us for decades. She suffered a stroke and cannot walk or perform any physical activities.
All her shows have been cancelled, and she is the mother of two wonderful children. She needs our help.
Her bills have piled up. Please send whatever you can to her number 0719210779 (NAME: MARY MAINA). God bless you,” Eric Omondi said.
Fellow artist and close friend Avril shared an emotional update on Instagram, providing details about Marya’s condition and how fans can support her recovery.
Avril posted a message from Marya’s family, which read:
“We extend our heartfelt thanks for the love, support, and prayers you have given to Marya over the past week.
As you know, she suffered a stroke caused by a blood clot that restricted oxygen flow to her brain.
She has since been discharged and is continuing her recovery at home.
Physiotherapy is ongoing twice a day, and although the left side of her body remains unresponsive, we are hopeful and encouraged by her strength.”
The family expressed their deep gratitude for the overwhelming support they have received and urged the public to continue showing solidarity.
“With that said, Marya and her family still need us. Please continue to support her and reach out to her personally where possible.
Every call, message, prayer, or visit makes a significant difference,” Avril added.
Marya, whose real name is Mary Maina, rose to prominence in the late 2000s and early 2010s under the legendary Ogopa Deejays stable.
She became a household name through hits like “Hey Baby” and “Sishiki Simu,” earning acclaim for her distinctive voice and sultry style.
In recent years, Marya has spoken candidly about her financial struggles and the challenges she faced after her rise to fame.
“I became famous and got money at a very young age. The worst thing is I didn’t have anyone to guide me — to tell me to save, invest, or buy land. Suddenly, I was broke. It was a mistake. I was only 22 then, but I learnt my lesson,” she once admitted.
“I tried working on projects, but I kept hitting a wall. Finances were the main issue. I didn’t have a manager, and managing myself was difficult,” she added.
