The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has clarified the actual number of tickets sold at Nyayo Stadium during Kenya’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against Gabon on Sunday.
Although it was reported that the stadium was sold out with a capacity crowd of 22,900, FKF has confirmed that the actual tickets sold were significantly lower.
The sitting capacity of Nyayo Stadium is 22,000 following the installation of additional seats.
However, in accordance with safety regulations set by both FIFA and CAF, all seats cannot be sold.
FKF president Hussein Mohammed explained to the media, “As per CAF regulations, you are not allowed to sell 100 percent of the seats; you are required to sell slightly less than that number.”
The FKFadded boss that there was an overflow due to issues in toll gate 8 and 2.
“For regular seats, we had 15,968. We stopped selling tickets at these numbers so any extra was an overflow and that happened when we had an issue on gate number eight and two.
“We had VIP tickets 1,331, car park slots were 329 and for the VVIP area, we had 107. So, total tickets sold were 17,735 and obviously there was a bit of an overflow,”
He also noted that there were a significant number of non-ticket holders inside the stadium.
The regular tickets which were priced at Ksh300 each, generated Ksh4,790,400.
Parking fees for the match venue were Ksh300, resulting in an additional Ksh98,700 from the 329 slots sold.
This brings the overall earnings from the match to Ksh7,290,100.
Mohammed mentioned that most of the VVIP tickets were not sold as they were allocated to invited guests, meaning the federation generated just under Ksh7 million from the event.
However, the breach of security diluted what was otherwise a successful day for Kenyan football and could potentially place FKF in violation of CAF regulations, which prohibit overfilling stadiums due to safety concerns.
