Kenyan athletes who won medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics have been awarded cash prizes by the government, as announced by President William Ruto.

During a reception at the Eldoret State Lodge on Thursday, Ruto commended the team for their historic achievements and for representing Kenya well on the global stage.

Gold medalists Beatrice Chebet (10,000 and 5,000 meters), Faith Kipyegon (1500 meters), and Emmanuel Wanyonyi (800 meters) each received Ksh 3 million.

Faith Kipyegon and Ronald Kwemoi were also awarded Ksh 2 million for winning silver in the 5,000-meter race.

Bronze medalists Mary Moraa (800m), Abraham Kibiwott (Steeplechase), Faith Cherotich (Steeplechase), Benson Kipruto (marathon), and Hellen Obiri (marathon) each received Ksh 1 million.

Kenya was ranked 17th among countries with the most Olympic medals and first in Africa.

President Ruto stated that his administration will work to strengthen facilities for athlete wellness and improve the country’s performance in the future.

“I am looking forward to expanding the sports infrastructure, and I want to encourage not only the government but also the private sector,” he stated.

Regarding the doping issue, he stated, “We must deal with it firmly, decisively so that it does not undermine our great talent as a country.”
