An uproar broke out in Eldoret after the Uasin Gishu county unveiled several thematic monuments as part of beautification to welcome the city’s new status.
The uproar, especially on social media, was sparked when residents questioned the quality of the sculptures.
Sources reported that a government official was unhappy with the monuments and ordered them to be either removed or replaced.
The CEO of the Eldoret Municipal Board, Tito Koiyet, was not available for immediate comment.
The firms contracted to install the monuments are currently on site, removing them in preparation for President Ruto’s event to hand over the city charter to Governor Jonathan Bii.
Many residents expressed surprise at the work done on the monuments, which were erected at various strategic locations in the town’s central business district.
One of the monuments, located at the Fims junction, depicted an athlete whose identity could not be discerned, despite the town being home to numerous well-known veteran and current record-breaking athletes.
Photos of the monuments were circulated on social media, causing an uproar and backlash against the county administration and the Eldoret Municipal Board.
Another monument, depicting a green maize crop installed at the Telecom roundabout, was also removed due to reportedly featuring a discoloured maize cob.
Following the public outcry, it was uprooted and replaced with a new, greener version.
Residents led by Kipkorir Birgen said in an online post that, “these are monuments of shame and the county could have done better.”
Birgen said the monuments do not reflect the city’s newfound status.
