Julius Yego qualified for the men’s javelin final at the Paris Olympics with an impressive throw on Tuesday.
Yego, the 2016 Olympics silver medalist, threw a season-best 85.97m on his third attempt to secure his spot in the final.
His performance was a significant improvement considering he had struggled to hit 85m in the past year and had qualified for the Olympics through the World Athletics rankings.
Yego’s first attempt was 78.84m, which he improved to 80.75m in the second round.
However, it was his final attempt of 85.97m that earned him second place in the qualification round.
Julian Weber of Germany won the qualification round with a throw of 87.76m, and Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic came in third with a throw of 85.63m.
Toni Keranen of Finland secured the final qualification spot with a personal best throw of 85.27m.
Yego, who expressed frustration at not having a coach while preparing for his fourth and final Olympic Games, had a successful season, winning his fifth African title with a dominant throw at the African Championships in Douala, Cameroon in June.
Although he did not initially meet the Olympic qualifying standard of 85.50, his recent performance at the Paris Olympics shows that his hard work is paying off.
