Kenya Met announces more downpours for Southern Kenya.

Kenyans in different parts of the country should brace for heavy rainfall. This is after the Kenya Met Department announced there will be more rain in the coming week.

Kenya Met said the Southern half of the country will experience heavy rains while the North Eastern and North Western parts will continue to be dry.

“From January 6th to 12th, 2024, expect continued rainfall in the southern half of the country, while North-eastern and North-Western Kenya stay generally dry,” Kenya Met stated.

“Isolated storms may occur over South Rift Valley and South-Eastern lowlands. Stay weather-aware.”

The forecast came on the very day Nairobi and some parts of the country experienced heavy rainfall.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry’s weather outlook for January 2024 shows that Highlands East of the Rift Valley and Central Kenya are likely to experience intermittent rainfall with some breaks throughout the month.

The rainfall is likely to be near to above the long-term average amounts received during the same month in other years.

During the just-ended October-November-December Seasonal Rainfall, some counties were among the counties that were affected by landslides and mudslides.

In Kiambu, several houses were destroyed by a mudslide in Site village and two people were also killed in Riara village after a mudslide buried their house.

Bernard Chanzu, on behalf of the Director of the Kenya Meteorological Department, identified potential impacts likely to be experienced this month in agriculture and food security, water resources, and the environment.

“The sunny and dry weather conditions to be experienced in the next three months will be favourable for crop harvesting as well as land preparations in readiness for the coming planting season in the agricultural areas. The public is encouraged to seek guidance from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development,” he said.

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development  Climate Prediction and Applications Center said the greater part of the Horn of Africa is expected to receive heavy rains between January and March 2024, with the weather pattern following recent El Nino rains.
