After being notoriously overlooked for years on end,Missy Elliott is finally getting endowed with a Video Vanguard at this year’s VMAs,slated for August 26.
The iconic rapper’s musical achievements are unparalleled. Having established herself as the ultimate multihyphenated entertainer, with a career spanning decades in music production, songwriting and being the cutting-edge rapper that she is,her legacy cannot be put to question. Add those over-the-top music videos to the picture, and you will realise that a Video Vanguard has been long overdue.
Missy’s debut album Supa Dupa Fly came out 22 years ago. Ever since, she has blazed a trail for a horde of other female entertainers by setting trends that have stood the test of time,a la the fish eye in videos. Over the years, controversy has continuously built up as seemingly less deserving artistes get feted all at the expense of Missy. After J Lo’s win last year, the internet was in a frenzy. Lots questioned her win, further deteriorating MTV’s credibility. J Lo herself too stated that she felt Missy was more than deserving. Meanwhile, reports abound that after contemplating getting rid of Michael Jackson’s name,MTV has decided to retain it for now.
As is customary for the recipient,Missy Elliott will also take to the VMA stage, and for the first time in 16 years. Now you know that will be one for the record!
