Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has responded defiantly to the chants directed at him during his team’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
Goals from Cody Gakpo in the first half and a penalty by Mohamed Salah in the second half condemned City to their fourth consecutive Premier League loss, marking a troubling and unusual streak for the defending champions.
The high-stakes match saw tensions rise, with Liverpool fans chanting “getting sacked in the morning” as City’s recent struggles continued. However, Guardiola took the chants with a mix of humour and defiance.
After the game, Guardiola commented, “I’m so proud of my six Premier League titles!”
He addressed the Anfield crowd’s jibes, as reported by Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano, saying, “I didn’t expect Anfield to say I will be sacked in the morning, but it’s fine; it is what it is.
When you win, you laugh. Maybe they are right! I didn’t expect that at Anfield. Maybe they should have sung it in the past,” he added, hinting at irony.
Despite these challenging times, Guardiola remained optimistic, stating, “From here, we will start building our confidence and winning games. I want the team back; I want my players back. We will reset from here. I can feel that.”
Manchester City’s form has alarmingly dipped in recent months.
The reigning champions have not won a match since their narrow 1-0 victory over Southampton in October.
In their last five matches across all competitions, they have avoided defeat only once, managing a chaotic 3-3 draw against Feyenoord in the Champions League.
This poor run of form has left City in fourth place in the Premier League standings, with 23 points, 11 points behind league leaders Liverpool.
Guardiola is determined to reverse City’s fortunes, urging his squad to reset and rebuild their confidence.
With key players struggling for form and others sidelined due to injuries, Guardiola faces a crucial period to revive his side’s title hopes.
The spotlight remains firmly on Guardiola and Manchester City as they navigate an unexpected and challenging season.
