President Joe Biden faces increasing pressure to step aside due to his age, with his campaign halted by a recent COVID-19 infection.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have reportedly met with him privately to express concerns about his candidacy.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has also allegedly told Biden he cannot beat Donald Trump in the upcoming election.
The White House announced Biden’s COVID-19 infection on Wednesday, stating he had mild symptoms.
Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed Biden is vaccinated and boosted, having tested positive for COVID twice before.
Earlier in the day, Biden was in Las Vegas visiting supporters and speaking at an event but cancelled a later campaign speech.
Dr. Kevin O’Connor, Biden’s physician, noted that the president had upper respiratory symptoms and received his first dose of Paxlovid.
Despite feeling fine initially, Biden later tested positive. He thanked supporters for their well wishes on Twitter and vowed to continue working while recovering.
Another tweet from his account criticised Elon Musk and wealthy individuals, directing followers to a donations portal.
During his Las Vegas trip, Biden interacted with diners at a Mexican restaurant but appeared slower and stiffer than the previous day’s energetic speech.
He cancelled a speech at UnidosUS, a Latino civil rights organisation, amidst efforts to regain Hispanic voter support.
Observers noted Biden moving cautiously and unmasked as he boarded Air Force One, declaring he felt good.
Biden’s re-election campaign is already troubled by internal dissent following a poor debate performance against Trump.
Reports indicate Schumer, Jeffries, and Pelosi have conveyed concerns that Biden’s candidacy could harm Democratic chances in November.
Congressman Adam Schiff and other Democrats have called for Biden to step aside, suggesting he pass the torch to another Democrat.
Biden, however, remains steadfast, stating he will continue unless advised otherwise by his doctors.
