The race to be Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga’s deputy ahead of the August polls just got more interesting.
Raila had a list of three candidates given to him by a panel of prominent persons tasked to help him pick a running mate. They were; Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Narc Kenya Martha Karua and former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth.
Ms Karua, a veteran of Kenya’s pro-democracy movements of the 1990s, reportedly ranked highest on the shortlist of three people recommended for the running mate position to Mr Odinga by a panel he appointed to interview prospective candidates.
Mr Odinga, the opposition leader who is making his fifth presidential bid on May 16, announced Martha Karua as his running mate on the Azimio Coalition.
Ms Karua’s rising stature in Mr Odinga’s coalition has particularly stirred up a buzz within Kenya’s women rights movement.
Hence marking her as the first woman to be nominated as the President’s running mate in the Kenyan history.
