Nigerian star Rema has made history as the first African artist to achieve over one billion streams for a song in the United States.
His song ‘Calm Down’ has surpassed a billion streams, earning awards and topping multiple charts, making it the best-selling song from Africa.
In another remarkable achievement, Rema’s song ‘Calm Down,’ featuring Selena Gomez, has become the first Afrobeats and African song to accumulate over one billion streams, gaining widespread acclaim in the USA.
This information was shared in a Chart Data post on June 17, 2024.
The popular song is featured on Rema’s debut album ‘Raves & Roses,’ which was released in March 2022.
Following its commercial success, the single gained even more momentum and impact after Selena Gomez joined the remix released as one of the songs on that version.
The remix became hugely popular worldwide, particularly in the USA, where it set several Afrobeats and African artist records.
The ‘Calm Down’ remix reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, setting a record for a modern African song, only second to Hugh Masekela’s 1968 chart-topping ‘Grazing In The Grass.’
Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ holds the distinction as the first and only Afrobeats song to surpass one billion streams on Spotify.
It also holds the record for the most-viewed music video by a Nigerian artist on YouTube with over 596 million original views, while the remix has garnered 893 million views.
