Shujaa thrash Germany in a winner-takes-all showdown.

Kenya Sevens made a triumphant return to the World Rugby Sevens Series by securing a 33-15 victory over Germany in a tense playoff match in Madrid.

Despite a rocky start with Germany scoring first, Kenya’s captain Vincent Onyala equalized and Tony Omondi’s conversion put them ahead 7-5.

The team faced a setback when Chrisant Ojwang was sent to the sin bin for a high tackle, allowing Germany to score another try, though their conversion was missed.

Upon Ojwang’s return, Kenya regained the lead, ending the first half at 12-10.

In the second half, John Okoth extended Kenya’s lead with a try, which Omondi converted, making it 19-10.

Germany responded, narrowing the gap to 19-15.

However, Kenya managed to secure additional tries, finishing the match at 33-15 and earning their place back in the World Series.

Shujaa, Kenya’s rugby sevens team, had been relegated from the World Series last year after a 13th-place finish.

They spent time in the second-tier Challenger Series in 2024, performing well enough in various legs (winning in Dubai, placing third in Montevideo, and fifth in Munich) to secure a spot in the promotion-relegation playoff in Madrid.

With two victories and a single loss, Kenya faced Germany in a must-win match, ultimately securing their return to the World Series.

With their place in the World Series confirmed, Kenya Sevens now turns their attention to preparing for the Olympics, having already qualified for the Paris Games in their first major assignment post-relegation.
