The Super Eagles triumph over Cameroon in the AFCON knockout stages has been met with gleeful reception by Nigerians in the homeland and the diaspora.
Nigeria has a thriving diaspora community, with millions spread across the world.
This has sometimes meant that talents of Nigerian descent like Bukayo Saka and David Alaba end up representing other countries.
However, others, like the Man of the Match against Cameroon, Ademola Lookman, who represented England in the youth ranks, Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi, and Ola Aina, who were also eligible to represent the Three Lions, have opted to don green and white.
While many of these players prefer to represent foreign nations, as they identify with the countries they were born in, a lack of immediate opportunities has seen them transfer allegiance to Nigeria.

While Nigeria has lost out on talents like Saka, Jamaal Musiala, and Karim Adeyemi to England and Germany, respectively.
Young stars like Noni Madueke, Lesley Ugochukwu, and even an older one like Dominic Solanke remain poachable, and the named trio have recently shown interest in the affair of the Super Eagles.
The Premier League stars are following Nigeria’s exploits in Ivory Coast, and after Peseiro’s side dumped out neighbouring Cameroon, they, in elation, took to their Instagram stories to share celebratory posts.
Madueke was part of the England contingent that recently won the U-21 Euros; Lesley Ugochukwu is a France U-21 international; and Solanke, possibly the easiest to convince, is 26 and has only registered an appearance for England, which came in 2017, seven years ago, leaving him eligible for a switch per FIFA rules.
