Taylor Swift endorses Kamala Harris for president.

Written by on September 11, 2024

Following Tuesday night’s presidential debate, Taylor Swift publicly endorsed Kamala Harris for president, choosing to make her announcement via an Instagram post signed as “Childless Cat Lady.”

This moniker was a nod to a 2021 remark by JD Vance, Trump’s vice presidential candidate, who had disparaged Harris and other Democrats as “childless cat ladies” leading miserable lives.

Swift’s postmarked her first public comment on the 2024 election, stating her support for Harris due to her advocacy for important causes.

Swift praised Harris as a “steady-handed, gifted leader” and expressed her belief that the country could achieve more under calm, rather than chaotic, leadership.

In addition to supporting Harris, Swift lauded Harris’s vice presidential pick, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, for his long-standing defense of LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and women’s bodily autonomy.

Swift’s decision to publicly back Harris was partly driven by a false AI-generated image of her endorsing Trump that appeared on his website.

This incident heightened her concerns about AI and misinformation, prompting her to clarify her true voting intentions.

Trump’s use of the fake image led to backlash from Swift’s fans, or “Swifties,” who accused him of spreading false information.

Swift’s endorsement came after a heated 90-minute debate covering issues like abortion rights, the economy, and immigration.

Known for her previous endorsement of President Joe Biden and Harris in 2020, Swift’s political stance is well-established.

Despite the possibility that her influence on voter registration could be limited, given her fan base’s existing support for Harris, her post garnered over 4.5 million likes in just a few hours.

Swift encouraged first-time voters to register and promised to provide more voting information on her page, asserting, “I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make.”
