Mariah Carey’s 2005 album, The Emancipation of MiMi,turns 15 today. The record is widely regarded the greatest comeback album ever by one too many music historians. After the disappointing performance of Charmbracelet and Glitter-her two previous albums that gravely tanked- Mariah Carey was deemed a ‘write off’ and a ‘has-been.’
In her quest for comeback and win back the popularity she had amassed over the years,MiMi set out to work on an album that would later become a pop culture phenomenon. The title alluded to her departure from Virgin Records to the consequently signing with Island Records,and her ’emancipation’ from the media-fuelled personal criticism. The album’s production majored to a large extent HipHop and RnB elements, with Jermaine Dupri,Kanye West and Pharell Williams being some of the top-notch producers.
The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100,and spawned the hit singles among It’s Like That,We Belong Together and Don’t Forget About Us. Regarded her most commercially acclaimed album, an influx of accolades ensued. She snagged the Grammys for Best Contemporary Album,Best RnB Song and Best Female RnB Vocal Performance. The mega success of the record saw MiMi’s resurgence as chart and music Royalty.
