Trouble for Oliech as Olunga becomes fans’ favourite after yesterday’s win.

Kenya’s national football team captain, Michael Olunga, scored a hat-trick against Zimbabwe in the Four Nations tournament on Tuesday. 

The win helped Kenya end the tournament with seven goals, with Olunga scoring five of them. 

This performance also saw him rise to fourth place on the all-time top scorers list for Kenya, with a total of 29 goals from 58 games.

He surpassed Livingstone Madegwa and Ali Akajo who were both on 26 goals each before Tuesday’s match. 

Olunga is now just six goals away from matching the record of former Gor Mahia forward William Ouma, who leads the top scorer’s list with 35 goals from 66 games played between 1965 and 1977. 

The next target for Olunga is AFC Leopards legend Elijah Lidonde, who scored 33 goals for Harambee Stars in just 26 matches between 1950 and 1961. 

Given his recent form, Olunga could soon surpass the second-placed record of Dennis Oliech’s 34 goals, which he achieved in 76 games between 2002 and 2015. 

Olunga’s hat-trick against Zimbabwe helped Kenya seal a 3-1 comeback victory, with Olunga equalizing just before halftime before adding two more goals to secure the win. 

This victory came after Kenya’s 4-0 win over hosts Malawi on Saturday, with Olunga scoring two goals to take his tally to 26. 

The Kenyan captain is in good form, having scored seven goals in his last three matches in national team colours, including a brace against Seychelles in the 2026 World Cup qualifier in November. 

Olunga’s performance is crucial for Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat, who has backed him even in the face of criticism after he went six games without scoring between March and November 2023. 

Upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Burundi and African champions Ivory Coast in June will be tough assignments for Kenya, but they will be counting on Olunga to help them secure victories and achieve his personal milestones.
