YouTube star MrBeast has angered Mexican officials with his viral temple videos.

Known for his fast-paced and high-production YouTube content, MrBeast’s production company is being accused of using images of Mexico’s ancient archaeological sites to promote a chocolate brand, and the country is seeking compensation.

A video featuring the social media star exploring Mayan ruins has garnered around 60 million views since May 10 on YouTube, where he has 395 million subscribers.

In the video titled “I Explored 2000-Year-Old Ancient Temples,” MrBeast visits ancient Mayan cities, including Calakmul and Chichen Itza in southeastern Mexico.

After entering a pyramid, he remarked, “I can’t believe the government’s letting us do this,” drawing criticism from several viewers who felt he had access to areas that should be restricted to Mexicans.

“In this video, we are going to be exploring a dozen temples,” MrBeast added.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has requested clarification regarding the conditions under which MrBeast was granted access.

In the video, he advertises his own branded snacks, calling them “Mayan-approved,” which led to an official complaint from the National Institute of Archeology and History.

While Mexico appreciates that YouTubers and young people worldwide recognize the value of its indigenous civilizations, it “strongly condemns those who take advantage,” the institute expressed in a social media post.

The permit issued to MrBeast’s production company, Full Circle Media, did not authorize the use of images from the archaeological sites for advertising commercial brands for private profit.

As a result, Mexico is demanding compensation for damages and a public retraction due to noncompliance with the terms of the permit.

In Mérida, the capital of Yucatán state where Chichen Itza is located, several residents voiced their disapproval of the access granted to the YouTuber.

Tour guide Jose Elias Aguayo stated, “Restrictions and regulations should apply to everyone: domestic tourists, foreign visitors, as well as us locals.”
