Benzema, Putellas – 2022 Ballon d’Or Winners

 

Karim Benzema is the 2022 Ballon d’Or champion. The Frenchman was feted in a colorful ceremony attended by past and present football greats at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. Former Liverpool skipper and current Bayern Munich sensation Sadio Mané was ranked second with Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne closing the top 3.

 

Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas was crowned in the women’s category to complete back-to-back wins of the highly coveted Award.  

 

 

Hosted by French-British Journalist Sandy Heribert and Chelsea Legend Didier Drogba, the 66th  Ballon d’Or saw the 5th Frenchman after Michel Platini, Raymond Kopa, Zinedine Zidane and Jean-Pierre Papin to win the award.

 

Current English Premier League Champions Manchester City emerged Club of the year. Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski was awarded best striker while Thibaut Courtois was presented the Yachine Trophy reserved for the best goalkeeper.

 

 

Sadio Mané won the first-ever Socrates award thanks to his humanitarian endeavors with Spaniard Gavi winning the youngster of the year award.

 

 

Last year’s winner and most awarded player Lionel Messi was nowhere in the rankings while United’s Cristiano Ronaldo was placed 20th.

 

The ceremony saw Alpine F1 driver Esteban Ocon deliver the trophy in an official F1 car with his 2023 teammate Pierre Gasly also in attendance.
