Stand-up comedian YY has addressed accusations that he moved on too quickly after his relationship with Marya Okoth ended.
The couple, who share a child, announced their breakup earlier this year.
In an interview with SPM Buzz, YY explained that he values family, which is why he didn’t take long to move on.
He added that spending too much time healing after a breakup can lead to complacency.
“I love to build a family for myself, and one thing I know as a man is that if you give yourself more than six months after a long-term relationship ends, you will never move on. If you get used to it, you will never want someone beside you. I love family, and I am doing this for myself and for people who love me,” he said.
YY shared that he personally cannot take more than eight months to “heal.”
“If I stay single for eight months after a breakup, I cannot settle down. You get comfortable. Relationships are a risk. If you start living alone, can you move to something you know won’t work? My mum is happy, and I am happy. I’m not doing this for anyone; I’m doing this for me,” he added.
YY had previously clarified that he was not legally married to his baby mama, Marya Okoth.
Interestingly, he noted that despite not having a marriage certificate, they considered themselves husband and wife throughout their years together, having what he described as “a perfect marriage,” blessed with a healthy daughter, now aged three.
“Let me put this straight and maintain some respect… in as much as we didn’t get married legally, we respected each other. It’s just the documents we didn’t have, but we treated each other as husband and wife. The papers are just a formality,” YY explained in a phone interview with Ankali Ray.
He further insisted that his past relationship was not a come-we-stay arrangement, emphasizing that he and Marya had all the hallmarks of a marriage, aside from the legal paperwork.
“I don’t want people going around disrespecting what Marya and I had by saying it was a come-we-stay marriage. No, it was not,” YY added.
The couple announced their split on social media in September 2024.
