Queen Margrethe of Denmark Strips Grandchildren of Royal Titles

Just as the dust settles following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, another royal family is making headlines.
Europe’s only remaining Female Monarch, Queen Margrethe of Denmark, recently stripped her grandchildren of royal titles, a declaration that will take effect when the new year starts.
Prince Nikolai, Prince Felix, Prince Henrik and Princess Athena will now go by the Count and Countess of Monpezat.
“Her Majesty the Queen wishes, with her decision, to create the framework for the four grandchildren to be able to shape their own lives to a much greater extent, without being restricted by the special considerations and obligations, as a formal relationship ten,” read a statement by the royals.
The changes will however not affect their places in the order of succession.
This radical decision has since led to a royal fallout.
Prince Joachim, whose kids are affected by the new rule, revealed that he hadn’t spoken to the Queen following the announcement.
Apology
Queen Margrethe II has since apologized for the move but still maintains that it was the right choice as far as ‘future-proofing the monarchy’ is concerned.
“There have been strong reactions in recent days to my decision to the future use of titles for Prince Joachim’s four children. Of course, it affects me.” The new statement starts.
“I have made my decision as a Queen, mother and grandmother, but as a mother and grandmother I have underestimated how much my youngest son and his family feel. This makes a big impression, and I’m sorry for that. No one should doubt that my children, in-laws and grandchildren are my greatest joy and pride. I hope now we as a family can find peace to get through this situation ourselves.” Queen Margrethe added.
This development comes at a time when all royal families are facing intense criticism with sections calling for the abolishment of all monarchies. The anti-monarchs are calling for the royals to be replaced by elected leaders.
