Prominent digital content creator, influencer, and stand-up comedian Crazy Kennar, whose real name is Kennedy Odhiambo, has shared some key reasons behind the closure of his hotel business just months after its launch.
Kennar humorously took responsibility for the closure, citing poor planning and the need to cut expenses as the main factors that ultimately led to his downfall.
“Besides comedy, I’m a businessman as well,” started off the 26-year-old.
Reflecting on his experience, Kennar recounted how he opted to hire friends instead of professionals in the industry because he was trying to minimize costs as he was just starting out.
“I used to have a restaurant back in the day and it is one of the funniest stories I have ever. You know, when I was hiring people for the place… you know when you start a business you assume it is easy. You tell yourself, ‘We’ll open today, market tomorrow and the profits will start streaming in,’ Kennar said during an interview with Oga Obinna.
Adding, “We randomly called people we know at the time and we were like, ‘wewe kuja ufanye kazi.’ I remember we called one friend to be the delivery guy and he didn’t even know how to ride a motorcycle dude was just wobbling around and then fell into a ditch hadi nduthi ikajikunja,” in between bouts of laughter.
Kennar also recounted another funny story about a friend he hired as a waiter, “I called another friend to come be the waiter… he used to talk too much. Always somewhere storytelling, he wouldn’t even notice when there was a customer in the restaurant
Waiter sometimes alikuwa anajisahau hadi unapata yeye ndiye customer anakula buffet”
Through all this Kennar realized he wasn’t well equipped to run such an enterprise and he’d made a couple of mistakes along the way. This knowledge helped him gain a deeper level of respect for all entrepreneurs irrespective of the size of their business.
“After a while, I sat down and realized this business thing isn’t what I expected. With that, I learned to respect anyone who sells peanuts
Business is not as straightforward as people might think. There are individuals with a much deeper understanding of it,” he shared.
He also revealed that he would sometimes eat his stock, believing it was a way to expand his business, not realising he was actually making a mistake.
