The award-winning singer Nadia Mukami criticised nominated Senator Karen Nyamu for her insensitive remarks regarding the proposed 2024 financial bill.
Nyamu upset many Kenyans when she expressed her indifference towards the heavy taxation of sanitary towels, stating that she doesn’t use them herself.
The comment was made during a heated debate with netizens who were calling her out for defending the bill. Karen Nyamu, a mother of three, received backlash for her comments.
“Why not? So many Chinese companies already manufacturing here exactly what we import. At least the labour and raw materials is ours,” part of her comment read as she tried arguing her case.
In a different sentence, the politician wrote, “I use tampons,” after being asked by an Instagram user which affordable and durable Kenyan brand she uses.
Reacting to Karenzo’s remarks, Nadia shared a screen grab of the enraging comments accompanied by a lengthy post calling out the nominated senator.
“A very careless COMMENT!!! Sometimes people really need to invest in PR professionals and social media managers to avoid SUCH COMMENTS!” part of the artist’s heated post read.
She emphasised that period poverty is a significant issue in the country, with girls from underprivileged backgrounds having to go to extreme measures to afford menstrual hygiene products.
The ‘Kai Wangu’ singer also highlighted the significant increase in the prices of sanitary pads and questioned why products like condoms are distributed for free, while menstrual products are taxed, despite menstruation not being a choice.
“Imagine there are girls in marginalized areas who go to the extent of having s3x for pads, girls who skip school during those days of the month! Pads nikiwa high school zilikuwa 45 – 55 bob ile packet ya 5 saa hii ni 80 -120!
The conversations we should be having is how can we make pads affordable if NOT FREE! Si kuna condoms free, why not pads???? This was a very careless comment!!!I!! #rejectfinancebill2024,” the rest of her post read.
Sanitary towels and diaper prices are among some of the biggest concerns that have dominated conversations surrounding tax proposals in the Finance Bill 2024.
According to sections in the Bill, an eco levy would be applied to imported finished products which ironically dominate the market.
